Miami-Dade County and the south Florida region provide an exciting setting for the 2020 Rail~Volution conference. Rapidly growing and diverse, the region is in the midst of a major expansion of transit options, including Metrorail, bus rapid transit, a redesign of the bus network and intercity rail to Broward and Palm Beach counties. Miami-Dade also is increasing mobility options by leveraging innovative technology, from on-demand service to transit signal-priority to an open payment system. Transit-oriented developments are transforming communities across Miami-Dade. The Underline, a 10-mile linear park and trail that dramatically repurposes public space with multimodal options, opens in 2020.
One cannot think of Miami-Dade County and south Florida without thinking of resiliency. Rail~Volution 2020 will be a laboratory for learning how the city and region are preparing for sea-level rise as they address challenges of housing affordability and traffic congestion familiar across North America. Miami-Dade also showcases ways that public and private sectors are working together to expand opportunity.
How will the virtual conference work?
We’ve designed the virtual conference across four partial days: the pre-conference kick-off on October 21, October 28-29 (the main conference days), and a post-conference wrap on November 12. Each day will include provocative plenary speakers, challenging us to consider new perspectives and rethink how we shape more livable, equitable communities.
We’re planning dedicated networking and discussion time, on the pre-conference kick off day, during the main conference days, and on the post-conference wrap. This will include facilitated small group discussion, Idea Exchanges and the opportunity for attendees to suggest and lead conversation on topics they are passionate about.
The concurrent sessions will be live on October 28-29, the main conference days, and available on-demand afterward. The main conference days also feature live exhibit booths in the Rail~Volution Public Square. The conference includes on-demand Mobile Workshops and a virtual PK Slam, powered by PechaKucha.
Registered attendees will have access to the conference site a few days before the kick-off on October 21 until the post-conference wrap on November 12 (possibly longer!). They’ll be able to connect with other attendees, join discussion groups and access on-demand content throughout.
We’ll be sharing more specifics as we get closer to the conference dates. No doubt about it – the 2020 virtual conference will be packed with opportunities to learn and exchange ideas, to refresh the vision for equitable communities at a time of great change. Join us!
